Cow.Land.
New personal project I'll be spending some time exploring and messing with.
A character design and an environment/action piece for it. Thematically, it kind of harkens back to the original idea of my signature logo.
Some quick spot illustrations I did for a Heifer International fundraiser I'll be helping out with along some friends from church.

OUCH (WARNING: GORE! 18+)
(Sorry, Liu Kang! WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!)
This is sort of a tribute/love letter (with doodle!) to game franchises such as Mortal Kombat and God of War. No matter where you stand on the idea of violence in games, you have to hand to developers like Netherrealm Studios and the GoW team at Sony Santa Monica for being able to come up with such creative executions and making games that aren't just violent, but fun!
I remember finding a copy of Mortal Kombat 3 tucked away behind a cabinet that my parents hid from me, as it was my Christmas gift for the year. My brother and I played that game after dinner every day for months! I also remember my mother dressing me up as Scorpion for Halloween when I was in 6th grade and crying when my brother wrinkled up a sketch I did of Scorpion. My dear late grandmother was so sweet and tried to iron the wrinkles away from the drawing. Haha!
God of War is just epic and visceral. It's probably one of the most visually-influential franchises of the past ten years that has affected my art.
Props to both developers for the creative pieces of work they've been pushing out! Can't wait to see what's next for both teams!

Update!
A freelance piece I finally got around to wrapping up.
And a mech piece I’ve been sitting on for the past few months. It’s still early, but I wanted to share a WIP. Hopefully I’ll be able to find some time to finish this one up. <3 Mechs!

RE-ENTRY (News, news, art)
Good grief. It’s been three months since my last post. Time really flies by when you’re...super busy. Really, though, a lot has happened in the past few months. Here’s a quick rundown.

So this is what I was working on at Sledgehammer Games. No, it wasn’t Dead Space 3, Call of Duty: Civil Warfare, or Call of Duty: Isaac Clarke like some of my nerdy friends hypothesized. :p I’m really excited to finally see some of the media come out for this game! It was a really fun project to be a part of and I can’t wait to play it! It’s only been about two months since my departure from SHG and I am really impressed with how much more prettier the game’s looking (it was already quite the looker before I left). I’m hoping we’ll be getting some more media from SHG and IW next week at E3!

Back in March, I made the decision to join Kabam in Redwood City. Kabam’s been great so far! It’s probably the biggest change I’ve gone through professionally. It marks the first time I’ve worked on a social game and it’s also the first time I’m working on a game set in a fantasy world. It’s also a really big company (especially since it’s only a few years old), which is quite a big change-up for me. But I’m having a fun time and learning quite a bit from the talented art teams! I’m looking forward to sharing some work soon!

In other news, some of my more recent work can be found in two new publications. One of my pieces will be published in “Spectrum 18” later this year and some select pieces can be seen in CFSL Ink’s “Gorilla Artbook, Vol.1” (it’s the first art book for the crazy monkeys who post at Gorilla Artfare).

Some more news. You might be wondering why my logo’s different all of a sudden. Well I recently discovered (via Gray Gary) that my logo is nearly identical to the symbol used by a Greek Neo-Fascist political organization. So I kind of wanted to distance myself from that, since…it’s not me. Haha! But I also wanted to use this opportunity to rebrand myself. The new logo follows the same format as the old. My initials combined together into one shape. But this time I wanted it to be less rigid and to have a bit of a color to it. I’m pretty happy with how this one turned out. Now I’ve got a napkin full of chicken-scratched failures that I need to throw out.

Art-wise, I only have one thing to share today. Hopefully I’ll have more to share soon (I’ve got a lot of work-in-progress pieces sitting in my hard-drive waiting to be worked on!). This was a fun poster illustration I did for my friend, Emma Coat’s upcoming film, “HORiZON”. I really wish I had more time to spend on it. It’s a fun little world that Emma’s created!

Destination 1
Been noodling at this over the past few weekends. I’m kind of tired of it, but I learned a few new things from it! I just wish I gave the guy a more dynamic pose. Next time.

Weekend Arting
Some thing I’ve been toying around with over the weekend! Hoping to get more done throughout the week!
Thumbnails for images I want to work on. The theme is “Destination”. Same character(s), different parts of a singular environment, different palletes.
Here’s the WIP for the first image. The colors are partially inspired by “Enslaved”. I really like some of the color choices they used in some of the stages.
First time messing around with Sculptris. Pretty fun stuff, so far!

Beautiful/Grim
Wow, it's been a while. Here's my Beautiful/Grim piece. It might go through some slight tweaks, but this is it for the most part.

I'll be doing some more painting this week, so expect some more frequent updates! :]

GORE - Split + Step-By-Step
Hopefully none of you will think any less of me when I say this, but I've always been a fan of violent action-y stuff. Like a lot of people around my age, I grew up playing games like Mortal Kombat, Doom, Quake, and other games that I was probably too young to play. They were entertaining in ways I never thought I should be entertained by. But regardless, it'd be impossible for me to deny that those kinds of games inspired me a lot. With games like God of War 3, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, and Dante's Inferno on the horizon, I felt it was about time I made a piece that would serve as a tribute to hardcore action games.

And here's a quick "step-by-step" tutorial.

Cover Challenge
Another challenge I did for ArtOrder . I've never really tried doing a cover illustration before, but working on this one was a good learning experience. I only spent a few days on this and I kind of wish I went for a more dynamic composition.

Update From California
Funny enough, this is my last day in California before I make my way back to Florida. I really enjoyed my time here. The weather in phenomenal and being in the presence of San Francisco's cityspace again is really breathtaking for me. After having spent 4.5 years going to school in SF, it was a great pleasure to be back (even with all the smelly sewers near North Beach).
While here, I spent most of my time working as a concept artist at a media studio named Eveo. I got to do some really cool stuff there and learn about some things I thought I'd never have researched on my own. During my off hours, I got to visit old friends and of course, paint! I finally got the chance to work on an ArtOrder challenge. For those of you who aren't familiar with ArtOrder, you should head on over there and check it out. It's ran by the Senior Art Director of Wizards of the Coast.
Anyways, here's my entry for the Earthquake Dragon Challenge:

It's a mix of a lot of things. I was mostly inspired by many of the Colossii (from Shadow of the Colossus). Looking forward to seeing everyone else's entries :)

Standoff WIP
I don't really like sharing WIP's to the general public, but I figured I can't just continue to post art every month or so. So here's something I've been working on during my off hours. I hope to be able to finish this this weekend.

Wired
It’s around 6am right now. I’m a bit wired from drinking half a can of Rockstar Orange. It’s a decent drink. I never crash from it and It’s pretty effective and doesn’t taste too bad.
I’ve been meaning update this blog for a while, but I’ve been distracted by work and Dominance War amongst other things. Seems like there’s always an excuse, huh?
So here’s some art updates. I guess the bad thing about not updating for a long time is that you end up having to post a crap load of stuff the next time you do.
I recently uploaded some of my Sci-Fi Concept Art Package work. It’s not done, yet, but I hope to re-visit it in the near future. Some things are speedies, orthos, illos, and misc. Some I hate and some I don’t. :p

And here’s my Dominance War IV progress. I’m really thinking I’m not going to finish this in time. I’m alright with that, really. One thing that I set out to do with this challenge was to go against the grain. For those of you not familiar with the DW challenges, usually participants end up creating super over-the-top creatures/robots/humans/cyborgs/whatever. All the entries look great and polished, but I wanted to do something a bit different. So I decided on designing something more practical and not worry so much about how many guns or how many tanks it could bench. I just wanted something intimidating and with I wanted to push myself in trying to convey it in a threatening pose/image (which I have yet to have done). Enough with the blabber.

I’ve still got a turnaround and a final illustration to do. But once again, I doubt I’ll meet the deadline (May 11). Good luck to my comrades who are in the process of completing their entries! Lots of cool stuff out there.
I’ll be attempting to add a link bar and a bit of info about me to this blog in the coming weeks. I’ll hopefully be getting assistance from a web design pro I know (since I know just about nothing in regards to this blog app). Fingers crossed!
